Previous Years: 2008-2011

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

Less. A lot less. My head was just not in the game, especially the last few months. But I did finish two of the three fics I set out to finish last year, so I'm very happy about that. Two out of three ain't bad.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?

It hasn't been posted yet, but I'm still working on that Renesmee-centric fic. Somewhere, pigs are flying.

What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?

Grow Wings and Sing, which took four years to finally finish, but it's done, and it's more than I ever could have hoped it would be.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

I really tried to let the characters talk to me, rather than the other way around. I'm still fighting not to let my brain take over too much, but I shouldn't. Things are always so much easier when I just sit down and start writing and stop thinking about it so hard.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

Finish that last fic I didn't last year (which was a Twi fic that has been on the backburner forever, but I love it too much to let it languish as a WiP). Finish my Ruby backstory fics. Not get so frustrated when things don't go my way. Work on one damn fic at a time, maybe two, and not 20.

My Best Story:

Into This Wild Abyss is everything I wanted it to be and more.

Story Most Underappreciated By The Universe

Into This Wild Abyss. I LOVED world building and working through all of the daemons and their names, and I would do it all again, because I LOVED living in this universe.

Most Fun:

Without a doubt, Road's End. SHMOOOOOP. So. Much. Shmoop. And a curtain fic to boot.

Most Disappointing:

My Ruby backstory, which is still languishing unfinished. And it bugs me because the idea is there, it's all in my head, I just have to sit down and put the words on paper.

Most Sexy:

None? No, really. Most of my fic this year was gen, with a little splash of slash. And even less het. This is a problem that needs to be remedied immediately.

Hardest To Write:

Grow Wings and Sing, in part because I was so attached to it, and also because I had an awesome beta who kept challenging me to make it better and better and better.

Most Unintentionally Telling:

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. I never expected to finish "The Hunger Games" and come out of it having a social and political debate.

Choice Lines:

When Death comes for President Snow, it is neither swift nor painless. -- How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

"Maybe we should get curtains," Sam says one afternoon, standing back to examine the windows with an overly thoughtful expression.

Dean snorts from the kitchen; he doesn’t even look up from unpacking the groceries. "We don’t need curtains."

"I was thinking maybe something lacy."

Dean mutters, "I’ll give you lacy."
-- Road's End

Saskia paces the room as the full weight of the day hits him. He feels broken, hollowed out and worn down, like he’s lost something he can never get back again. Something that wasn’t even his to begin with.

Saskia runs to Dean then, leaps into his arms with a burst of energy he didn’t think she still possessed. She presses her forehead against his chest as she buries her face in his shirt. “They were always ours,” she says roughly, and Dean threads his fingers through her fur, holding on.
-- Into This Wild Abyss

Protecting Sam - it’s the only thing he knows how to do, burned into him down to his bones the night the fire burned his entire life to the ground. -- Grow Wings and Sing
